Birmingham is the second largest city in the UK, and largest, most populated local authority with 1.1m inhabitants. Birmingham has a vision to become a leading green city, by establishing a programme of work which will help it adapt to climate change, reduce carbon emissions and increase the number of green jobs.
Birmingham’s Sustainable Procurement Strategy is currently being updated to focus on the themes of environment, economy and society, with initiatives within these themes including; local and district energy generation; supporting local business, SMEs and third sector ogranisation; purchasing Fair Trade products and considering social value.
The Birmingham Business Charter for Social Responsibility which is signed by all suppliers entering into a contract with the council, and one of its six principles is to be ‘Green and Sustainable’ i.e. aim to protect the environment, minimise waste and energy consumption, and use other resources efficiently.
